RPAC Vision 2020 in practice

I hope everyone has had a chance to look at our new club Vision. I thought that it would be appropriate to follow-up on that with a few examples that embody "Athletics for everyone", which not only demonstrate how the Vision works in practice but also reinforce that the Vision is not new, it is what we as a club are already delivering.

This month I will start with the seniors. On Sunday 26th January 2020, two of our RPAC ladies were both running a half marathon. Usha Stevens had jetted off to the warmer climes of Seville, whilst Ginevra Stoneley was running much closer to home in Farnborough.

Usha’s half marathon PB up until now had been a 2:29 in the Royal Parks Half Marathon, but as that is not recognised as meeting the required race standards, Power of 10 was still showing a best of 2:34. Usha has however upped her training, including the “less intense” sessions at Battlebridge track on a Tuesday evening, and had recently broken 30 minutes for Parkrun for the first time in over 5 years. She has also been receiving training advice from the RPAC coaches.

Ginevra meanwhile was just completing her first month of full-on marathon training for London 2020, where the aim is to see if she can get close to her sub 3 hour PB from London 2019. Ginevra is also working very closely with the RPAC coaches, who have been helping with her detailed training plans.

So, the outcomes ….. In Seville, Usha absolutely smashed her PB by 14 minutes, coming home in 2:15:21, whilst in Farnborough Ginevra ran 1:28:42, finishing 4th W45. This means she has qualified for the England Masters Half Marathon team, who will compete in the match against a Celtic Team at the Fleet Half Marathon on 15th March.

Next month I'll follow-up with some examples from the Junior section.

Volunteering at MABAC / Border League races, Sunday 1st March

As a club, Reigate Priory AC has a track record of successfully organising a number of races every year. Some of these (Summer Evening 10k, Priory Relays, Holly Run) raise funds for the club, thus keeping your membership fees down to the incredibly low levels you currently enjoy, whilst raising our profile in the local community. Others (Surrey League cross-country, Border League, MABAC) are a requirement of us competing in these leagues, without which we would not be able to provide as many competitive opportunities for either juniors or seniors.

Staging all of these races relies on members of the club volunteering as marshals, on the finish funnel, course setup and break-down and many other roles. There is a small group of "ever presents" who help at every race, but we are repeatedly in the situation where with just weeks to go before an event, we do not have enough names to fill all the required roles. This adds a massive burden to the job of both the Race Director and the Volunteer Coordinators. With nearly 350 members, even if every senior and one parent of each junior volunteered just once each year, we would have more than enough people to stage every race with ease.

So, for all of you who have not volunteered recently, the next opportunity is on Sunday 1st March, when we have a MABAC race (seniors) commencing at 10 am, followed by a Border League cross-country (juniors) at 12 noon. If you have not already put your name down, please contact Sam & Usha as soon as possible by e-mail,volunteers.jpg

RPAC AGM 2020

We are planning to hold the 2020 AGM on the evening of Monday 27th April. Timings and venue will be confirmed closer to the date. Please put the date in your diaries.

The 2 year terms of the current Treasurer and Secretary end this year, so there will need to be an election for these posts. After 4 years, Anthony Collins has indicated he will be standing down as Treasurer, so this post will definitely need to be filled. If you are interested in standing for either of these posts, please contact Ginevra Stoneley (secretary.jpg) or me (chair.jpg) for further information.
