Return of Parkrun delayed until 24th July

Following the announcement this evening from the Prime Minister confirming a delay to Step 4 of the Roadmap until Monday 19 July 2021, it is now intended that Parkrun 5k events in England will not restart until Saturday 24th July (see here for the full statement). Sadly this means that our Couch to 5K graduands will not be able to run Riddlesdown  Parkrun as their graduation event, however they will still be running a 5K distance for the first time on 10th July and I am sure they would welcome a good turnout form RPAC members to help them achieve their goal. More details to follow in due course.

Surrey Schools T&F Trials Kingston 12th June from Dave Mills

In the absence this summer of the usual format of district competitions followed by finals day, Surrey Schools held a day of trials at Kingston on Saturday ahead of selecting the team for the English Schools T&F Championships being held in Manchester in July.

In the inter-boys (U17) category, there were great performances by George Evered who was 4th quickest in the 200m and Oscar Curry, 5th quickest in the 800m. Both boys with new PB's!

In the Junior boys (U15), Samuel Stapley was in the tightest of finishes in the 800m, with a second quickest time on the day which in a non-pandemic year would have meant a Silver Medal.

Imogen Wheeler ran a superb 100m in the Inter-Girls event to finish the 4th fastest with a new PB!

In the Inter-Girls 800m Lilah Unwin continued her run of fast times with another PB, breaking her own club record for U15G'S 800m, and her time of 2.15.51 saw her finish number one in Surrey Schools, and comfortably within the English Schools entry standard which is 2.18.

A great day for all the young RPAC athletes at the event!

Don't forget your water bottle...

Whilst it remains so hot please remember to bring some water (or your refreshment of choice) to the training sessions. There's not much shade at Battlebridge!

First run in an RPAC vest and a new PB!

Alex Mansfield had his first outing in his RPAC vest in the RunThrough Battersea Park 10k on 5th June and recorded a new PB of 37:20. Cracking result Alex and I am confident that this will be the first of many PBs wearing the vest.

A first Ultra for Andrew Pringle

Andrew Pringle reports that he has been inspired by Kate Knight's example and decided to take part in the "Run to the Sea" 50K event on 5th June. This was from Horsham to the seafront at Hove. He finished in 6:40:25. Awesome Andrew!
Andrew reports that "It was a great day and certainly a different running challenge! The slog along the Downs Link was so-so but great to be on the South Downs Way in such brilliant sunshine. After all these hot miles, the ice cream at the end was the best tasting I think I've ever had"

Talking of Kate...

Kate completed her 5th Ultra in 5 weeks, finishing the Lake District 100Km race yesterday. This was her 74th event of marathon or greater distance. She says "The course was brutal, very rugged in places but so enjoyable". She isn't joking about being brutal; there is a total of 2500m climbing on the course. At the time of writing the results haven't been published so I can't tell you her finish time.  Well done Kate!

Saturday 5th June 2021 National Youth Development League Kingston - by David Mills

The first Track and Field league match of the year took place in Kingston on Saturday in warm and sunny conditions. RPAC took a team of U15 and U13 boys and girls to compete against five other strong clubs in the National Youth Development League and all our athletes acquitted themselves well with several outstanding performances.

A truncated timetable to keep numbers manageable in these post lockdown days meant a number of the usual events weren't available so some of our athletes missed out. Some non scoring results are yet to be posted.

There was heavy point scoring for the team from our two speedsters in the U13 boys with Max Orchard and Michael Maguire winning the 75m A and B races respectively and each by some distance! For Max it meant another club record with his time of 10.0 also seeing him 2nd fastest in the UK at the time of writing! Michael's time of 10.4 was a PB and moves him up to 7th in the UK rankings.

Both boys also competed in the long jump with Max winning the A competition and Michael winning the B. An outstanding afternoon for both boys!

They were joined in the 4 x 100m relay by Ethan Else and Stanley Phillips, and the team stormed home in 1st place.

Reigate Priory AC's U13 1200m  runners before their races

Another U13B'S club record fell in the 1200m with Buddy Kedgley finishing 2nd in 4.00.8. Stanley Phillips ran a good 1200m too, finishing 3rd in the B string with Ethan Else performing strongly as a non scorer.

Eve Goulding ran a new PB in the U13 girls 75m with a quick time of 10.8. Good points were added by Sophia Potter in the 75m (PB!), the 1200m and long jump and their were good performances in the 1200m too from Kaia Hessey and Neve MacGregor.

Kaia, Sophia, Kyra Pemberton and Eve finished 5th in the 4 x 100m relay.

In the U15 match, there were maximum points scored in the boys 800m with Samuel Stapley running strongly to take 1st place by a considerable distance with a new PB of 2.07.1. This moves Samuel up to 16th in the UK rankings. 1st place in the B race went to Joel Lawrence with a good time of 2.23.7 in his first competitive 800m.

Imogen Wheeler was 2nd in the 100m with another PB, a quick 13.2.

The girls 800m saw strong performances from Ella Scrase, 2nd in the A race with a huge PB, a fast 2.29.6, and Sophia Bryant 2nd in the B string with another quick time of 2.34.0.

With the 800m places filled, Cara Koutzaroff-Richards and Imogen Abrahams stepped in to race in the 300m and both girls ran well to each finish 4th in the A and B strings respectively, both new PB's, and scoring good points for the team.

Milo Sears finished 4th in his first 300m with a good time of 43.2.

Many thanks go to the ever dependable RPAC qualified Officials, Ashley, Naomi and Ivan for helping make the competition possible, and to Mike Gent for helping with the offiating at several of the events.

The next YDL match for U15/U13 is in Guildford on Saturday 17th July when a full timetable of events is expected.

RPAC finished in 5th place on the day with two more fixtures to come.

English Schools T&F Championships

Lilah Unwin ran two more qualifying times in the 800m for the English Schools T&F Championships being held in Manchester in July with fast races at Worthing and Milton Keynes in the last week. Lilah goes again this Wednesday evening at the Linford Christie Stadium in a British Milers Club Regional Race.

The Surrey team for the Championships will be selected after the trials being held in Kingston this Saturday. Good luck to all our athletes taking part in the trials which in addition to Lilah include Samuel Stapley in the Junior Boys 800m and Oscar Curry in the Intermediate Boys 800m.

Lilah Sets New U15G'S 800m Record from David Mills

Competing at the London Hurdles and Middle Distance Open Meeting in Bromley on Saturday, Lilah Unwin produced an outstanding performance to clock 2.16.12 for her 800m. A new PB and a new club record! Lilah is currently performing at a consistently high level.

At the same meeting there were new PB's in the 1500m for U17 Eva Marsh who won her race in a speedy 5.03.14, and for U13 Max Orchard with a quick 4.56.50 in his first race of the season over the longer distance. Both continue to produce excellent performances.

Another young athlete performing consistently well is Shakila Keable, and at the same meeting, Shakila broke through the 11 minute barrier in the 3000m with a new PB time of 10.54.92.

Meanwhile, also on Saturday, across London at the HHH Open Endurance Meeting being staged at the Millennium Arena in Battersea, U15 Samuel Stapley took 4 seconds off his 800m PB to record a great time of 2.08.7.

Max Sets A New Club Record In U13 Boys' Long Jump by Dave Mills

At the Bracknell Open meeting  on Saturday 29th May Max Orchard jumped an impressive 4.87m in the U13 long jump breaking the existing Club Record for the event and cementing his No 2 UK ranking!

Earlier last week, on the Monday evening,  Max ran a fast 100m at the Blackheath and Bromley Open meeting.  His time of 13.60 is very fast for his age group, and a new official PB for Max! Max's time at the Quad Kids meeting in Guildford was even quicker at 13.3 but that result hasn't found its way onto Power of 10 at the time of writing.

Max's performance all round is truly remarkable; not only is he ranked No 2 in the UK for long jump but he is also ranked in the top 5 for 800m, top 15 for 100m and top 21 for 1500m. Awesome Max!

AFD Open Meeting 31st May by Dave Mills

On Monday afternoon 31 May,  competing at the Aldershot Farnham and District Open Meeting, Lilah Unwin maintained her consistent run of form with a fast time of 2.19.83 in the 800m.

At the same meeting U11 James Beaty, running in only his second 1500m race, took a full 21 seconds off his previous time recording 5.22.71 for a new PB. An excellent result for someone so young!

Earlier in the day James ran in the 150m sprint, finishing with a creditable time of 24.36 seconds. Well done James!

All of these young  athletes are having strong seasons! Well done Max, Lilah and James!

Thames Valley Harriers Open Wednesday 12th May from Dave Mills

A late in the evening appointment for U15 Shakila Keable last Wednesday at the Thames Valley Harriers Open saw her post a new PB in the 3000m. Shakila took some 12 seconds off her previous best time completing the gruelling distance in 11.01.02.

On Sunday afternoon U15 Lilah Unwin took part in the Invitation 800m to close the Guildford Young Athletes Open Meeting. A fast race with a quality field saw Lilah take 1st place with another sub 2.20 time.

Well done to both girls!

YAC Guildford Saturday 15th May from Mike Gent

The Young Athletes Club Guildford hosted a Junior Individual Quad Kids event on Sunday. There was an U7, U9,U11 and U13 event, separately for boys and girls. Each athlete does four events, a sprint, an endurance race , a jump and a throw. Times and distances are converted to points, as in a Decathlon.

There was a great turn out from RPAC athletes, with over 20 athletes competing, and in spite of some dreadful weather, they achieved some fantastic individual results.

Whilst the final results have not yet been published we had a number of medal winners. Gracie Shade won silver in the U9 girls. Florence Shade was fourth in U11 girls. Mateo Mahop won gold in the U11 boys. Max Orchard won gold in the U13 boys, with what was a record score for the event, whilst Alastair Fordyce was fourth in the same age category, and Eve Goulding was fourth in the U13 girls. In addition over the day a number of other athletes won their individual races and achieved PBs. It was lovely for the children to have the opportunity to compete again. Hopefully next time it will stop raining and the sun might make an appearance.

Wings For Life World Run Sunday 9th May

An RPAC team comprised of Stephen Smith, Jas Dhanda, James England and Ruth Willis competed in the Wings for Life World Run on Sunday 09 May. This involved setting off at 12:00 and being chased by a virtual car via an app. Your race is over when the car catches you. The team had chosen a flattish route around Brockham, running loops from Brockham Green, into Wellhouse Lane and back via Betchworth village,  Old Road and Kiln Lane. To add to add a sense of occasion the team wore club vests. At 1:00 all were going well and had settled into their stride. Come 75 minutes however, the lack of race training started to show with Stephen falling away from the group. Jas and James were the first to stop, follwed by Stephen and finally Ruth. Everyone managed to complete over 20 KM before being caught, with Ruth managing a very impressive 24KM coming in as the 701st female runner out of a total of over 80,000 competitors worldwide. Well done team!

One of the team who shall remain nameless stated "It was hot and we all wanted to stop before we were caught. Even though we all had our phones with us, we didn't take any photos!". He went on to add that it was enjoyable and great company.

Some fantastic results this week from our seniors...

Elaine Reddyhof competed in the 3000m at the South London Athletics Network "Coming Out" Track & Field Open on Saturday 1st May. She said " I ran in the first heat and finished in a time of 16:12. Even though I was last, this was the best time for a 3K that I'd run in a long while". Well done Elaine! I also noticed a certain Ginevra Stoneley ran at the same event.

Neil Freeman-Jones ran in the London Marathon Reunion 5K at Kempton Park racecourse on Saturday 15th May, finishing in 18:44 and setting a new PB into the bargain. Fabulous result Neil, well done!. Neil puts his time down to "the great coaching provided by RPAC". That's really good to hear Neil.

George Roux, Lee Savage, and Tom Ryan all took part in the Run Through Battersea Park 10K on Saturday 15th May, finishing in 33:29, 35:14 and 36:17 respectively. I think I am right in saying that it was a PB for Lee. I suspect that it may also have been a PB for Tom but I am unable to confirm this at present.

Here's a couple of pictures of Tom in his first outing in a club vest
