Reigate Priory Parkrun 10th Anniversary - and Paul's Milestone Birthday

RPAC runners turned out in numbers (apparently about 52) to celebrate the 10th birthday of Reigate Priory Parkrun. Perhaps it was the lure of the coffee and breakfast to celebrate Paul Walters' significant birthday that prompted people to run. Whatever it was, it was great to see so many RPAC vests on show - a terrific advert for the club.

You can read full details of the day here.

Send us your results, please!

If you participate in an event, email  to let us know your results. Please submit by Sunday evening at the latest to allow us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Ebbisham Boys League - Sunday April 7 Epsom

The first boys athletics league match is to be held on Sunday 7 April at Epsom. There are events for U11-U17 boys. Each athlete can do three events plus a relay. There is no cost to enter nor any limit on the number of athletes we can enter . We just need to register our athletes a couple of days before the event. This is a low key event and great for those with limited competitive experience. Please let Mike Gent know if your son would like to compete and what their preferred events are.

Open Meetings

In addition to the two leagues we enter each season there are a number of Open Meetings held locally that athletes can enter directly via the relevant Club's websites. There are two coming up over the Easter Weekend being the Crawley Open and the Tunbridge Open. I notice that the closing dates for entries is 27 March and 29th March respectively. There is a Basingstoke Open on 6 April and for the older Juniors the first Watford Opens are on 3 April and 17 April. If you are interested in your son/daughter competing in some open Meetings please talk to their Coach if you need some guidance on the best events.

British Schools Biathlon Championships

The finals of the British Schools Biathlon championships were held at Bath University over the weekend. Athletes had to qualify for the finals based on their performances at regional events in January. Eleni Harvey, Jessie Humber, Leila Modarres, Imogen Leung and Morgan Du Preez all qualified for the finals and put in strong performances in Bath. Morgan is to be congratulated on being the winner of the Year 4 category, where she followed up a strong swim, which placed her fifth after the first event, with a very impressive run that gave her first place overall.

No Training Session on Easter Monday, 1st April

Usha and Mel would like you to note that the session on Monday 1st April is cancelled as it's Easter Monday and that "the coaches will be continuing to stuff their faces with Easter eggs and hot cross buns whilst enjoying a night off!"

Wednesday Training Sessions

Attendance has been lower than usual at Wednesday evening training sessions lately. Why not come and give them a try if you haven't done one recently (or haven't done one at all!).
The coaches would like you to note these key points

  • We meet in MORRISONS car park in Reigate @ 7 p.m. As there is two hours free parking you can combine the run with a shopping trip if needed.
  • The lighter evenings mean we can start using Priory Park soon – hurrah!
  • The coaches are friendly and welcoming  – they don’t bite!
  • These are varied runs to suit everyone – whether you are wanting recovery or a bit of a challenge …..we welcome speedsters too!
  • MOST IMPORTANT – on the last Wednesday of each month (subject to number of enthusiastic punters) we finish it off with a bit of social at the nearby CORZO LOUNGE
  • Sign up to the Weds WhatsApp group now and answer our poll every Weds morning to let us know whether you are coming.  We'd love to see you!

Jimmy James Handicap, 28th March Denbies 7pm

Good luck to anyone running the final event of this year's Jimmy James Handicap series on Thursday. Please note that entries for this have now closed.

Surrey Road League needs you

The first race of the Surrey Road League - the Sutton 10K on 7 April - is fast approaching and we need you! Let's be honest: You were probably going to do some of these races anyway, right? Why not do as many as you can and help RPAC get to the top of the league? Last year, the men managed an impressive 6th place finish, with the women in 7th; this year, with more runners, we hope to do even better. All you need to do is enter the races you can make and list Reigate Priory Athletic Club as your club. Contact or if you have any questions or want to coordinate travel to the races.

Sunday 7th April Sutton 10k
Sunday 12th May Richmond Half (Surrey Champs race)
Sunday 2nd June Dorking 10 (Surrey and Club Champs race)
Sunday 23rd June Richmond 10k (Surrey and Club Champs race)
Saturday 13th July Elmore 7 (at the Chipstead Village Flower Show and Fair)
Sunday 21st July Elmbridge 10k
Friday 26th July Wedding Day 7k

Masters League track and field

If you'd like to give track and field - think high jump, long jump, javelin - a go but are looking for slightly more laid back events than the SAL, then consider the Masters League. Andrew Pringle is the Masters League manager for RPAC, so please reach out to him if you have any questions, . The dates this year are:

  • Monday 13th May Wimbledon
  • Monday 3rd June Epsom
  • Monday 17th June Kingston (unconfirmed)
  • Monday 8th July Sutton (unconfirmed)

Missing Cross Country? Why not give the MABAC League Events a go?

Unlike Surrey League Cross Country, the MABAC League runs right throughout the year. There are ten clubs in the league and each club hosts a race per year - so roughly one event per month (not February or December). These are all run in wonderful locations in the beautiful Surrey countryside. Every runner who turns out for the club earns points, and you can always find someone of a similar level to compete with. All races are approximately 8 km long with a 4km option if you're not feeling up to the full distance. Most races take place on Sunday mornings, they are free to enter and there is no need to pre-register...what's not to like?
The next race is in Winterfold Forest (near Cranleigh) on Sunday 14th April - and I can't lie, it's hilly!

If you have any questions please contact me , or if you'd like more information about the league visit their website.

Members' news

Globetrotting Jim Vince completed the Valetta Marathon in Malta yesterday in 5:47:37. He says that it was "a little warm, but a lovely coastal route". Well done Jim!

Closer to home Lisa Ashley completed the Coniston 14 miles on Saturday as a training run for the London Marathon. Lisa writes "The race claims to be the prettiest race in the UK and it certainly does boast some stunning scenery and views. It can also boast about some challenging hills and challenging weather - being located in Cumbria, what do you expect?!  A great race which I am sure I will be back to do again one day, but one downside for me, there is no bling upon finishing, just a slate coaster! "

Lizzie Mason had a royal encounter when she completed the Hampton Court Half Marathon yesterday (24th March). She writes "I managed to do this today without the foot giving way but still other niggles hence another slow one at 2.20.46. But I got round without stopping and somehow managed to come 1st in my age category! Kelly had to pull out at 6 miles with badly bruised and swollen ankle, bless her, probably all the mud sliding at Leith Hill!!!"
Well done Liz and commiserations Kelly - hope you're on the mend soon.

I do know that some club members took part in the YMCA Y2Y event on Sunday, but I haven't seen any pictures or information - please let us have some and we'll include them next week.
