Sunday 9th January Surrey Cross Country Championships at Denbies, Dorking

Are you available to help with course marshaling at the Surrey XC Championships? We have been asked by the organisers of this event to publicise a plea for volunteers.

There is a full complement of marshals to cover the course but extra help will allow for a shift rota to give everyone a break from standing in a vineyard all day!

If you can help, please contact David Clarke on . Your help will be much appreciated and you're guaranteed a unique view of the racing!

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Sunday 5th December Border League @ Lightwater Country Park

Sunday saw the first fixture in this season's Border League series held at Lightwater Country Park, Woking.

RPAC had twenty one runners across the eight races, many of whom were running in their first competitive event for the Club.

The day started well with Gracie Shade and Emily Beatty coming 1st and 2nd in the U9 Girls race and Edith Duncton running strongly to see RPAC second in the team competition.

In the U9 boys unfortunately we did not have a third runner as we would have been well placed with Piers Matthew seventh and Arthur Naish coming in twelfth.

Next up were the U11 girls. Lisette Matthews and Florence Shade came home third and fourth respectively, ably supported by Charlotte Ebbs and Denise Ornella who were thirteenth and twentieth out of a field of sixty five, leaving RPAC second in the team competition.

In the U11 boys the strong RPAC performance continued with James Beatty winning and Lucien Watkins, just pipped on the line, finishing third. They were well supported by Jay Johnson, George Duncton and Ludo Blennerhassett, who all ran well leaving Reigate third in the team event after the first match.

In the U13 girls Eloise Matthews came third, Livvy Heppenstall fifteenth and Amelia Jeffers eighteenth, leaving the team in third place.

In the U13 boys Max Orchard warmed up for the Inter Counties event next week by winning the race, Rocco Secker in twelfth and Isaac Beckett in sixteenth completed the team, who are placed third, and Robert Duncton also ran well.

The next Border League fixture is on Sunday 6th February at Stoke Park in Guildford.

Club Championships - Age Graded Award - submissions for this ASAP please

This year we have a brand spanking new age graded trophy up for grabs.  Could yours be the first name on it? (Apologies for the poor picture - it was really hard to photograph! )

Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Any recognised race distance is eligible
  • Track and road races are eligible
  • The race must be included in your profile on Power of 10 and be eligible for rankings (see here for more information about what races qualify for ranking). I'm sorry to say that this means that Parkruns are not eligible.
  • The winning result of the Andy Winterton Trophy (best age graded marathon) cannot be used to win this trophy as well.

If you have a result that you would like to submit for the Age Graded Award please visit the WMA Age Grading Calculator website, calculate your age graded score and submit it together with the race details and your age on the day of the race to me ( ) for verification. If you have trouble calculating your age grading please let me know and I will endeavour to do it for you  (again I will need the race details and your age on the day of the race).

Saturday 5th December MABAC Winterfold Forest

There was an excellent turn-out at Winterfold for the MABAC on Sunday. The report is here.

We have been advised that a runner from another club who ran at this event has tested positive for COVID-19. You may consider taking a lateral flow test as a precaution.

Congratulations to our Couch to 5K Graduates

On Saturday morning six members of our Couch to 5K course graduated by completing the Ifield Millpond Parkrun. The weather conditions were "adverse" (absolutely freezing with a brisk northerly wind and a bit of drizzle). Despite this they all completed the run in very respectable times. Well done to our new graduates Luke, Carol, Katie, Kerry, Alice and Karen! You are amazing - what a journey from 1 minute of running 10 weeks ago. Each graduate was presented with a RPAC medal as a memento of the course. Some of them have subsequently signed up for the Santa Run in Priory Park on 5th December (see below) and we are hoping that some of them will become club members.

Our graduates were supported and encouraged by 11 RPAC runners who ran with them. Thank you very much to all of you for turning out in such horrid conditions to support them. I think breakfast afterwards was some compensation! Ian Stammars was the first RPAC runner home, finishing in second place in 18:58 and Alice Smith was the first lady home in eleventh place overall, finishing in 21:23.

Left to right - Paul Sapsard, Kate Knight, Paul Walters, Sarah Walters, Bethany Higgins, Andrew Bamford, Jake Boud, Sharon Miller, Usha Stevens (both sheltering behind the sign),  Adrian Grant, Ian Stammars and our Couch to 5K graduates Katie, Karen, Alice, Kerry, Carol and Luke. Missing from the picture is Alice Smith.

We plan to run a new Couch to 5K course starting early in the New Year. Watch this space for further details.

Congratulations to Usha

Congratulations to Usha Stevens who has recently completed her Coach In Running Fitness (CIRF) course. This is the second rung of the coaching ladder and allows Usha to lead coaching sessions without the supervision of a more senior coach. This is very important to us as we continue to grow as a club and numbers at training sessions increase. Well done Usha, you are a star! I know it has involved a great deal of hard work to get this qualification.

RPAC Awards Evening

Look out for details of the 2021 Awards Evening coming soon. The provisional date for your diaries is 22nd January 2022.

Wednesday 1st December Training Session Cancelled

The normal Wednesday evening session is cancelled this week as many of the Wednesday regulars are going out for a Christmas meal instead.

MABAC Winterfold Forest 5th December 10:00

There is a MABAC event this coming Sunday at 10:00 in Winterfold Forest. From memory a large part of this course is run on tarmac so you could probably get away with road shoes, although there are some parts which can be muddy or sandy. This course has a "killer hill" which is very steep but quite short. Don't forget that there is a one lap option if you don't want to do the full distance.

I seem to remember that parking is a challenge - the nearest car parks are Hurtwood Car Park 6 or Hurtwood Car Park 5 on Alderbrook Road and Greensand Lane respectively. There are directions here and the What3Words reference is proves.imagined.bolts.

We are third in the league at the moment; it would be great if we could retain or improve on that position. In order to do that we need to get a good turnout; every runner scores at least 5 points in the two lap race and 2 points in the one lap race. If you haven't done one of these races before I can guarantee that you will enjoy it and you will find someone to compete with irrespective of your speed.

Meet in Bell St car park at 08:30 if you want to car share. Please let me know if you need a lift or can drive . Unfortunately I cannot attend this event so I will need a volunteer to take the register, dish out numbers, etc. Please do not forget your race number if you have one.

Stop Press: There is a bit of a shortage of volunteers at this event. Please let me know if are not planning to run and are able and willing to help out.

Tuesday 7th December Xmas Drinks at The Jolly Brickmakers

We will be gathering for Christmas drinks at the Jolly Brickmakers after the 7pm training session on 7th December. Please note there will be no 8pm session that evening.

Sharon Miller's Virtual Route 66 Challenge

Over the course of the past 11 months Sharon Miller has run the equivalent of the length of the famous Route 66 - a total  of 2280 miles. This is an extraordinary achievement that is the equivalent of running over 87 marathons, or almost 8 marathons per month! I noticed also that Sharon has clocked up 519 runs during this period, or three runs every two days. Sharon says that she wore out three pairs of shoes in the course of this challenge. Absolutely amazing Sharon, well done to you!

Couch to 5K Graduation / Parkrun tourism at Ifield Mill Pond Parkrun Saturday 27th November

We're off to Ifield Mill Pond for the Couch to 5K Graduation on 27th November. This is a parkrun that has fewer finishers than most (last week there were 55). It is pretty flat and run on tarmac paths. Whether you wish to come along to support the Couch to 5K graduands or whether you wish to run on your own, you're very welcome to come along and join in. It would be great if we can get a good turnout to support our fledgling runners.

We will be meeting up at 8:30AM near Gossops Green Community Centre (use postcode RH11 8HJ) - note that this car park is near the only loo available and is a 5 or 10 minute walk to the start.

We will be going to the nearby Squires Garden Centre (formerly called Cheals - the postcode is RH11 8PL and it's NOT the one near Buckland ) afterwards for breakfast and they do require numbers, so please do let Paul Walters know if you wish to attend

You can find the details of the parkrun at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ifieldmillpond/ and you can see details of the breakfasts at

This race sells out quickly you can enter here.

The other championship races will be the Wimbledon Dash 5K and the Dorking 10 mile (both also Surrey Championship races - dates TBC) with the 10K race being confirmed once all the league fixtures are known.

Surrey XC League, Match 2,  Wimbledon Common Saturday 13th November by Dave Mills

The second match in this season's Surrey XC League took place on Saturday on Wimbledon Common.
Highlights from RPAC Juniors included 1st place finishes for Oscar Curry (U17) and Samuel Stapley (U15). Euan Willis was 2nd in the U15Bs and Max Orchard 6th in the U13Bs.

There was a strong first run for RPAC from Nicole Haycock who finished 8th U15G with Ella Scrase putting in a consistently strong run to finish 11th U15G.

Our combined U17/U15 boys team remain in 1st place in the League despite just being edged into 2nd place in Saturday's match by Walton whose scorers were all U17'S.

All our runners put in excellent performances, including a youthful U13G'S team where Lisette Matthews and Florence Tombleson finished well up the order despite being still U11's and therefore non-scorers.

All the results can be found at https://www.surreyleague.org/sll/

MABAC Farley Heath 10:00 This Sunday 21st November

Please join us for the MABAC Farley Heath race this Sunday, 21st November and help keep RPAC near the top of the table. We are currently third in the league, having finished in second place in the last race at Nonsuch Park. It would be really great if we could get another good turnout.

If you need a lift or are prepared to drive others meet in Bell Street Car Park for an 08:30 departure. The location of the event is here.

Please let me know if you need a lift or are prepared to take others - think about the environment.

You can find the details of the parkrun at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ifieldmillpond/ and you can see details of the breakfasts at
https://www.squiresgardencentres.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/CB_breakfast_menu.pdf

Sunday 19th December Turkey Trot @ Denbies

It's a 9:00AM meet-up and a 9:15AM start for the Turket Trot run.

For those new to the club, the Turkey Trot is a seasonal get-together for a run/walk and refreshments in Denbies afterwards - all welcome.

Ian Edmonds will lead a run of approximately 10Km to Ranmore and back.

Paul Walters will also lead a 4 mile walk from Denbies, but note that the walk will start promptly at 9:00AM.

All wear something Christmassy!

2022 Club Championships

We are assuming that a normal race calendar will be possible in 2022 and have decided to revert to the normal format whereby the Club Championships are held over a series of nominated races. The first club championship race will be the Wokingham Half Marathon which will be held on 27th February. This is a fast, flattish course that is good PB material. This race sells out quickly you can enter here.

The other championship races will be the Wimbledon Dash 5K and the Dorking 10 mile (both also Surrey Championship races - dates TBC) with the 10K race being confirmed once all the league fixtures are known.

We are also looking at reviving the club Grand Prix competition - details to follow in a later newsletter.

Fiona Clark Memorial Service

A memorial service was held for Fiona Clark yesterday (14th November). There was a great turnout from RPAC members both old and new and many representatives from other clubs. The flowers sent on behalf of the club are shown below. The service was recorded and if anyone would like to see it please contact Nat for the link

Karima Graham completed the Richmond Park Half Marathon on Sunday in 2 hours and 4 minutes. This was Karima's 29th Half Marathon and she says it was "quite hilly"! Nice medal Karima and very well done!

Not content with a single marathon, Kate Knight completed two marathons over the weekend. These were in Saffron Walden on Saturday and in Hinchingbrooke Park in Huntingdon on Sunday. Kate has now completed 91 marathons. What can I say Kate? Truly amazing. Here is Kate sporting her two medals and putting her feet up for a well earned rest and a glass of fizz.

Ian Burks was featured in November's edition of Surrey Life magazine. We hope to get permission to reproduce the article in a future newsletter.

Senior Trophies

In case you missed this earlier in the newsletter I would like to start collecting the senior trophies back in as soon as possible to give me plenty of time to get them refurbished and engraved. Please bring them along to Battlebridge if at all possible or contact me to discuss alternative collection/delivery arrangements    Some people have retained trophies since 2019; we need them all back this year please. I will name and shame if necessary smile

It's another long one this week

Priory Relays Saturday 6th November 2021

Ian Martin writes:

As Race Director, I would like to thank all of the RPAC members who volunteered to help with this year's event on Saturday. After our attempts to stage the 2020 race were scuppered by Covid, it was great to be back in Priory Park and host so many old friends in this always popular event.
Current Covid regulations meant that we had to change a lot of the previous format, including setting up an outdoor Race HQ and runners using chip timing, and the organising team adapted admirably to the new procedures.
We were blessed with dry, if increasingly windy, weather and firm underfoot conditions, and saw some excellent racing. Provisional results, which are almost final, are now available on the Priory Relays website.
Many people made significant contributions, but I would like to give special thanks to Moray Carey, who managed all of the tedious form filling required by the Council's Environmental Health Officer to obtain permission to use Priory Park as well as liaison with Sports Systems on the new chip timing procedures; to Colin Kloes who collated the volunteers; and to Jas Dhanda who was Chief Marshal, helped to set up and take down the course, and did a final run around to pick any forgotten signs.
One amusing moment in the morning was 5 of us trying to put up the RPAC gazebo. Eventually we succeeded, only to find that it was inside out and had to be taken down again and re-erected!!
As a club we are very experienced at running race events, and we have received many messages of thanks for organising this event so efficiently.
This is my last year as Race Director of the Priory Relays, and I hope that you will be willing and able to give Jas the same level of support that I have enjoyed as he takes over for the 2022 event.

I would like to start collecting the senior trophies back in as soon as possible to give me plenty of time to get them refurbished and engraved. The Holly Run

It is with regret that the decision has been made to cancel The Holly Run for 2021; it was felt that the current restrictions would not allow us to stage the race with the usual enjoyable atmosphere.

Future Volunteering Opportunities - dates for your diaries

Sunday 6th March 2022 - MABAC (senior) and Border League (junior) events both hosted by RPAC in Priory Park. In the past the junior section (mostly parents) has provided a good number of volunteers for the MABAC event so that the senior athletes can still compete, with senior members volunteering at the Border League event so that parents of junior members are able to spectate.

In addition there are three events in Priory Park early next year that are not hosted by RPAC but at which we have traditionally provided some volunteers. These are :-

Senior Schools XC 22nd January 2022

SE Inter County XC 5th February 2022

Junior Schools XC 19th March 2022

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th October London South East Spartan Trifecta Weekend @ Nutley, East Sussex

The "Beast" race 13 miles with 30 obstacles and 2,425ft of elevation. Conner Wickens finished in 2:22:35 - age group winner.

In the "Super" race 10K with 25 obstacles and 968ft of elevation Conner finished in a time of 1:08:36 - age group winner.

Then later that afternoon Conner ran in the sprint race which was "more of a shake out".

You can see the results from this event here.

Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st October Wales Spartan Trifecta Weekend @ Crickhowell in the Brecon Beacons

Conner followed up the achievements above by competing again this time in Wales, running in the Beast 21K on Saturday and coming first in his age group in a time of 2:37:26, followed up by the Super 10K on Sunday and finishing first in his age group in a time of 1:26:32. Conner also ran in the sprint, and I'm guessing that this was again a shake out!

You can see Conner's Spartan profile here.

Saturday 30th October @ Weymouth Park Run (Lodmoor Country Park)

Annette Morris was 5th female in a time of 24:04 and topped the age grading chart overall with 84.15%.

Sunday 31st October Halloween Marathon

Kate had great fun walking through the city and seeing some of London in the evening. Kate found that there were no night underground services or trains to go home, so hubby came to the rescue! Only 11 marathons to go until Kate reaches her 100!
