Saturday 11th September - County Multi-event Championships

Max Orchard is the Pentathlon Champion!

Competing on Saturday at the Surrey and Sussex Combined Events Championships in Carshalton, Max scored a fantastic 1981 points to win the event, finishing 301 points ahead of his closest rival.

A new PB in the Pentathlon for Max and a new club record!

During the long day of competition, Max also PB'd in the 75mH, Long Jump and Shot, with strong performances too in the high jump and 800m.

As the Track and Field season draws to a close, Max is in the top ten in the UK U13B'S rankings in Pentathlon (2nd), 75mH (2nd) and Long Jump (8th)!

A great season by Max!

(Message from the editor: I've received reports of Max's achievements from three junior coaches independently. They're obviously over cloud nine with this brilliant result from Max!)

Sunday 12th September - Ginevra races in England Masters Representative Team at the Half Marathon at Richmond Runfest

Ginevra Stoneley qualified for the team at the Milton Keynes half marathon in December 2019, where she was the 3rd lady overall in a time of 85:01. The representative race was due to be the Fleet Half Marathon in March 2019. However, that was then cancelled in the week before because of the first COVID lockdown. So 18 months later, the selected athletes finally got their opportunity to race in their England vests on Sunday 12th September.

Ginevra finished 2nd W45 in both the England representative race and the open race, finishing in 87:05 just 19 seconds behind the 1st place W45. 14th woman overall (all age groups). The course was not easy, with about half the race on the Thames Towpath and the last half mile on grass.

Lee Savage also ran in the open race, finishing 21st, setting a new PB of 78:09. That is an achievement on this course.

The results are available here.

Resumption of Saturday Morning 9:00AM Group

The Saturday morning 9am training group will resume this Saturday 11th September.

Saturday 4th September YDL @ Sutton

The final YDL of the season was held at Sutton on Saturday. We were co- hosting with Camberley and are indebted to our wonderful officials who gave up their Saturday afternoon to make this event happen. We are fortunate to have some highly qualified officials supporting the Club, Ivan Barrett was Field Referee on the day, Ashley Burridge, Chief Timekeeper, and Ian Crouch ran a number of field events on behalf of the Club.

We had a number of strong performances from Reigate athletes, Michael Maguire won the U13 Long Jump, Max Orchard the U13 75m hurdles and Ewan Willis the U15 1500m, after a very exciting last lap. Isaac Beckett got PBs in the long jump and 800m. Eve Golding was pipped on the line in the U13 75m and Ella Scrase and Florence Carter continued their very consistent 800m performances. Imogen Wheeler was also pipped on the line coming second in the U15 girls 100m, whilst Lily Woodhams won the B string race.

That is it for the Athletics season. Cross country season is up shortly. As we transition, the next event for the older athletes, 11 and older, is the Southern Road Relays at Crystal Palace on 26 September.

Junior Training Tops

We have recently taken deliver of a new batch of Club training tops for Juniors. They come in Red, Light Blue and Dark Blue. They cost £16 and can be ordered and paid for via the LoveAdmin site.

The nights are drawing in rapidly, and now is the time of year to start wearing hi-viz clothing and the use of a torch (maybe a head torch) when running on footpaths in an evening - essential when running in one of our sessions as well as running on your own. Make sure that you are in possession of these items and use them when attending an evening running session going forward - not yet necessary for the 6PM Monday session.

Trust10 Polesden Lacey by Moray Carey

The National Trust’s Facilities & Support Services Manager at Polesden Lacey has confirmed that the monthly 10k run has been reinstated there, following suspension since the start of the original lockdown.

This is not a race but a self-guided, self-timed run which takes place around a waymarked, 10k route through the extensive Polesden Lacey estate.

The multi terrain course weaves in and out of woodland and is challenging with steep undulations. You start with a long descent and, ultimately, to regain this high spot at the end of the race there’s a steady climb back up! In between there are several more hills to negotiate.

Intermittently, there are clearings offering viewpoints back towards the honey- coloured mansion perched high on its elevated hillside location.

You self-navigate the course by following the direction arrows etched into posts positioned at strategic points where there’s a choice of more than one trail. The route is unmarshalled, so you need to be vigilant!

The seasons offer different sensory experiences - winter mud, spring bluebells, summer sunlight filtering through the tree top canopies and a golden carpet of leaves in the autumn when the trees are at their majestic, colourful best.

·         Where – National Trust, Polesden Lacey, RH5 6BD

·         When – 4th Sunday, every month (08:30 for 09:00 start)

·         Cost – free (car parking charge if you’re not an NT member)

For further information see...

 Parkrun Results

This week we had club members participating in Parkruns from Middlesborough to Horsham. Annette Morris set a very high bar on the age graded scale with her time of 23:51 which earned her an age graded score of 84.98% - this was the highest age graded score of the 434 runners at Horsham Parkrun this week. This followed hot on the heels of Annette topping the age grade score at Banstead Woods last weekend. Well done Annette! Closest to Annette on age grading this week was Lee Savage with his time of 17:51 at Albert Parkrun, Middlesborough. This earned him an age graded score of 77.59%.

Lily B Report by Mike Gent

The final Lily B Girls match of the season was held at Sutton on Saturday 28th August. There was a strong RPAC turn out.

Eva Marsh won the U17 1500m, with Louise Bressler in second place with a PB.

Ella Scrase was second in U15 800m and Florence Carter achieved a PB in the same race. Lily Woodhams improved her 100m PB.

Neve Macgregor battled with great determination to come second in the U13 1500m. Imogen Abrahams and Olivia Heppenstall both ran well in their events.

Eve Goulding demonstrated that as well as being a great sprinter she is a very competitive javelin thrower too.

Amongst the U11s the two 600m races were both won by RPAC athletes, Lisette Matthews and Florence Tombleson, in very exciting finishes in both cases. Florence and Gracie Shade both achieved 600m PBs in the same races. Lara Tombleson and Freya Else both performed strongly in their first time representing the Club.

My highlight is always the relays and the RPAC quartet won the U11 4x100m in exciting style when Freja Kargbo, having earlier had one of the fastest 75m times, made up two places on the final leg to just take the win on the line.

The winning relay team!

Max Orchard Excels in Tonbridge by Dave Mills

Max cleared 1m 33 in the high jump, a PB, and also PB'D in the Shot with 6.73m.

Max's score puts him at number 1 in the UK for U13B Pentathlon at the time of writing.

Next up for Max is the Surrey Combined Events Championships in Carshalton on Saturday week.

Saturday 21st  August The Shere 42km Trial Marathon

Here he is - the latest member of the 100 marathon club! Jim told us that he managed to finish this event in a "sociable" 5 hours 57 minutes. He said "I could’ve picked an easier one as it was a little hilly with 3,500ft of climb but some beautiful scenery".

Leanne McKeogh participated in the Shere Marathon on Saturday, finishing in a time of 6:13:51.

Kate Knight completed the Shere Marathon on Saturday, and followed this up with participation in the Thorpe and Egham Half on Sunday.

Saturday 21st August The Shere 10K - by Moray Carey

The rugged countryside surrounding the attractive village of Shere provided the rural setting for a series of trail runs plotted over challenging courses on Sat 21st Aug.

The shortest distance was 10k but there were also options of 21k and 42k which Jim Vince selected as his 100th marathon.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see Jim to wish him luck since the 10k race in which I was running had a later start time but I did encounter fellow RPAC member, Jeremy, immediately noticeable in the distinctive RPAC running vest.

After a mini circuit of the field behind the Shere Village Hall, the multi terrain route climbed the precipitous London Lane passing under the A25 and rising continuously within a tree lined corridor.

Because this is “byway open to all traffic” (BOAT), vehicular use had created water filled trenches leaving the attempted negotiation of the uneven, flint encrusted banks as the only alternative way forward.

The steady climb of almost 2 kms comprises practically one fifth of the entire 10k course! After reaching level ground, the route meandered in and out of woodland tracks and trails where cyclists, walkers and horse riders were occasionally encountered.

Tackling the 10k course required semi orienteering skills, due to the general absence of Marshals, but following direction arrows hand painted on the ground and ribbons suspended from branches added to the sense of adventure.

A race official kindly offered fruit and jelly babies at a feed station at about 6k and a bit further on a clearing had been carved out of the woodland revealing the charmingly named Honeysuckle Bottom Sawmill. Peering out of one of the barns was a character with a long, straggly, bushy beard resembling one of the guitarists from ZZ Top!!

After overcoming one further incline, the paths were reasonably level before re-joining London Lane for the long descent back to the field for the final few hundred metres to the finishing line to claim the race mementos – a wooden medal and a t-shirt.

I had intended running solo but, for most of the race, I was paced by and chatted to local Shere resident, Mike Keeble. By the time we re-entered the field he was a good 15-20 seconds in front of me but he paused for me to catch up with him so we could finish the race together.

An altruistic act of sportsmanship to crown an exhilarating race!

Sunday 22nd August The Big Half

Tom Almond and George Roux ran in The Big Half on Sunday. Tom finished in a time of 1:12:18 and George finished in a time of 1:14:12.

Mike Wylie finished The Big Half in a time of 1:26:24.

Steve Watkins ran in this event despite injury, finishing in 1:55:34.

Apologies if there were other entrants from the club that we've missed - let us know. Well done guys!

Sunday 22nd August Gatliff Ultra

  Parkrun

We received some positive feedback about last week's note about Parkrun so I am continuing it this week. This week we had RPAC members participating in Parkruns from Sizewell to Salcombe (Bolberry Down). You can see who ran which Parkrun and their time by clicking here.  Graham Bull topped the age graded score again with 81.54% with his run at Dulwich. Please let us know if this is of interest; if it is we may need to recruit a volunteer to help collate the age graded scores

Run Reigate

Don't forget that this year's Run Reigate event is being held on Sunday 19th September from 09:00. At the time of writing there are still spaces available in the half marathon, 10K, 5K and children's races, although I'm told that aren't many spaces left. Details of how to enter are here. RPAC has always been well represented in the longer races and I am sure this year will be no exception. There is also an option of virtual races if you don't fancy running in a crowd.

RPAC and Run Reigate have always had a good relationship and have provided   support and publicity for eachother's events. If you are not running at Run Reigate how about volunteering for the Run Reigate Race Crew? Full details are here.  All volunteers will get a free place in either Run Gatwick or Run Reigate next year.

Give us your results please

If you run in an event, do please let us know your results by emailing . If possible please can you submit them by Sunday evening at the latest as this allows us to meet the deadline for the Surrey Mirror sports pages.

A small team of RPAC athletes had a successful match 3 of the Ebbisham boys league at Sutton yesterday.

Michael Maguire improved his long jump PB to a very impressive 4.85m. Buddy Kedgley, in his first competitive 800m, recorded a time that puts him in the top 30 in the country in his age group, whilst Max Orchard further improved his PBs in both the 75m hurdles and the 100m. He is now the second fastest U13 75m hurdler in the country this season.

  Parkrun

Now that Parkrun has returned one of our members suggested that it would be good to see who had run which Parkruns and the best times and age gradings each week. There is a simple way of seeing who ran which Parkrun and their time by clicking here. This week RPAC runners ran in Parkruns ranging from Norwich to Woolacombe Dunes. Age grading requires us to open each race and harvest the results - a bit of a task. This week Graham Bull took the honours with a score of 78.00%, closely followed by Annette Morris on 76.29%, Ian Stammars on 74.49% and Jo Davey on 73.83%. Please let us know if this is of interest; if it is we may need to recruit a volunteer to help collate the age graded scores .

Congratulations to Lilah Unwin who finished in 5th place in the final of the England Athletics U15 Girls 800m held in Manchester over the weekend.

Lilah came through her heat on Saturday to return for the final on Sunday. Despite the cold, wet conditions, the race was quick with Lilah finishing in 2:17:86.

You can watch Lilah in action on YouTube in the heats here and in the final here

Lily B League Guildford 7th August from Mike Gent

The second match of the girls Lily B league took place at Guildford on Saturday. We had a strong turn out from the U11s and Reigate athletes were very much to the fore. We won both the 600m races through Lisette Matthews and Zara Wright. Zara also had the longest long jump and then Freja Kargbo and Lisette won their 75m sprints. Denise Ornella and Amy Dhanda both performed strongly in their first competitive match for the Club and Florence and Gracie Shade show their strong all-round ability with great results across all three events. The highlight though was the 4 X100m relay where we managed to field two teams and came second in both races after an impromptu fifteen minute training session with a juice bottle as a baton.

In the older age groups we were somewhat depleted, but dominated the U15 800m where Ella Scrase won the A race and Sophia Bryant the B race, and Eva Marsh followed up her win in the County Championship with another great time in the U17 1500m.

MABAC Wimbledon 3rd August - our best result to date

A really strong turnout helped RPAC to secure a best ever third place in the MBAC race held on Wimbledon Common last Tuesday, 3rd August. A full report is here, but the highlights are that we had 22 senior and 2 junior athletes taking part and that Andrew Reeves, Neil Fenwick and Frank O'Regan came in second, fourth and sixth respectively in the men's race with Anna Roberson, Gillian O'Regan and Bethany Higgins finishing well up in the ladies race. Joel Lawrence was the first home in the one lap race. Full results will be added to the results section once they have been finalised.

It would be great if we can get an equally good turnout at the remaining MBAC events.

River Relay 5th September received from MABAC

"I am sending this to all MABAC clubs for your interest. This event was devised many years ago by Feltham Puffers, a (now disbanded) MABAC League club and involved a 30 mile course from the totem pole in Windsor Park to Old Deer Park Sports Ground, Richmond. Over the years various route changes were witnessed and then, like the Puffers, the event was discontinued. A few years ago the event was rekindled by The Stragglers with a modified route and so now we have:

THE RIVER RELAY 2021 (see http://www.stragglers.org/clublife/event/432757)

Date: 5 Sep 2021 09:00  Course:  Dorney Church to Hawker Centre, Ham

The race is now run over 5 stages, following the Thames Path from Boveney Church near Windsor to the Hawker Centre in Ham, with a total distance of 26.2 miles. As in previous years, teams must feature at least one female and one veteran,, giving an opportunity for clubs to put runners together who may not normally share a team.

Entry fee: £10 per runner if they are England Althetics affiliated, £12 for unaffiliated

If anyone is interested please email riverrelay@stragglers.org. "

Epsom & Ewell Harriers Mad Miles Race

English Schools Track and Field Championships Manchester 10th-11th July - by David Mills

Congratulations to Samuel Stapley who competed for Surrey Schools in the 800m over the weekend. Samuel recorded another PB, finishing 6th in his race and was the quickest Surrey athlete in the Junior Boys 800m.

Unfortunately Lilah Unwin was prevented from running as her year at school were all isolating. It was particularly disappointing for Lilah as had she equalled her 800m PB set in June, she would have been the 4th fastest on the day.
