Thank you! Summer Evening 10K a success

Despite more than a few last minutes challenges - including, but not limited to, surprise roadworks and deflated inflatables - last Wednesday saw the successful 30th running of the club's Summer Evening 10K.

There were some exceptional performances from our athletes: Though South London Harriers took the two top male and female spots, Rob Wigley and Gillian O'Regan each came third respectively. The men's team finished first overall, with Rob's run backed by Ewan McKay in fourth place and Sam Rolaston, just up from the juniors, in fifth, while the women finished third, with Lisa Payn and Jo Willey rounding out the team. This was also Adam Lawes' first race in the club vest, well done! Full results are available here.

This race could not have happened without the tremendous efforts of the club members who volunteered to marshal, hand out water and medals, cycle, or put up signs - thank you so much for all of your help and for your commitment to the club. We also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Acting Race Director Moray Carey, who managed multiple crises that threatened to force the cancellation of the race with patience and good sense. Thank you, Moray, and good luck to Jas Dhanda, who takes over the reins next year!

Pictures from the race are now available to see and download in our picture gallery here, courtesy of the Reigate Photographic Society.

Reigate Priory parkrun cancelled this weekend

Reigate's parkrun will be cancelled this weekend, owing to the Pub in the Park event taking place there. The nearest parkruns are Banstead Woods, Mole Valley, or Riddlesdown, or, alternatively, you could save your legs for the Elmore 7 later in the day!

Parkrun Tourism at Brighton & Hove

This past Saturday, our parkrun tourism series visited Brighton & Hove for a little run by the seaside - you can read the full report from Paul here. Our next trip won't be until 7th September, to Seaford Beach; check out our RPAC parkrun tourism page here, and the current standings to our competition are here. Our parkrun visits are always great fun, and it'd be lovely to see you there! If you have any queries do please contact us on

Services for Steve Bass

Steve’s funeral will take place on Thursday, 11 July at 11am at Redstone Cemetery Chapel, Philanthropic Rd, Redhill RH1 4DG. After the service, there will be a natural burial at the cemetery for immediate family only. Guests are invited to an afternoon tea following the funeral at Nutfield Priory, Nutfield Rd, Redhill RH1 4EL. The family would be grateful if you could share pictures and videos of Steve here, for a slideshow at the refreshments.

We know many people loved Steve and will want to celebrate his life. Please respond to  if you are planning to attend the service and/or the refreshments, and if you have any special dietary requirements. Steve's family has suggested that attendees wear patterns and colour for the event; Steve's favourite colour was yellow.

You are invited to make a donation in Steve's name to St George's Hospital Charity Neuro Services unit, which took special care of Steve and his family during a very difficult time, or to the National Trust's Plant a Tree programme. Steve’s last act of kindness was to be an organ donor, giving three people the chance of a healthy life. Please consider if you would like to be an organ donor too and register

Funeral details for Moray Laing

It is with great sadness that we report that former club member Moray Laing has passed away. People may remember Moray as a dedicated club member who ran as well as being a talented field athlete; we would like to direct you to a couple of dedications to Moray from recent Banstead Woods parkrun news here and here.

The funeral service for Moray is to be held on Tuesday, 30th July, 11am at St. Richard’s Chapel, Surrey and Sussex Crematorium, Balcombe Road, Crawley, RH10 3NQ, followed by light refreshments at Heathy Farm (directly opposite the crematorium). If you would like to attend or wish to access the live webcast facilities, please reach out to Usha Stevens for more details.

Annual summer barbecue and 800m Grand Prix, 27 August

Put it in your diary: We'll be hosting our annual summer barbecue at the track on Tuesday, 27th August, featuring the 800m Grand Prix and, as always, the mixed junior and senior relay. More details to come, but last year's food truck will be making an appearance again!

Couch to 5K Programme starts 28th September

Our next Couch to 5K Programme starts on Saturday 28th September, with optional but recommended lead-in sessions on Saturday 14th September and Saturday 21st September. Participation is free for members, but if you know someone outside the club who might benefit from the programme, please let them know about it. The cost of the 12-week programme, including the optional sessions and parkrun graduation, is £17 all inclusive - an absolute bargain, but it gets even better: Graduates who go on to join our club will see that cost deducted from their joining fee. Of course, our main aim is to get people off the couch and running for health and welfare - joining our club is icing on the cake!

The full details of the programme can be seen here.

Dave Mills wins Reigate and Banstead Volunteer Awards 2024

Dave Mills is to be congratulated on very deservedly winning the Long Service Award in the Reigate and Banstead 2024 Volunteer Awards. Dave has been coaching the RPAC Junior Endurance Group since 2010. He is out in all weathers, running sometimes four sessions a week, and is responsible for ensuring countless junior runners have gained a life long love of running from his engaging and challenging sessions. Many congratulations Dave and thanks for all you do for RPAC.

Surrey Quad Kids Event

Last Wednesday, the Young Athletes Club in Guildford hosted the annual Surrey Quad Kids event. Ten local clubs with teams of ten athletes from school years 4-6 (five boys and five girls) competed against each other, with each athlete doing four events - 75m, 600m, howler throw and standing long jump - and ending with a relay. Bolstered by some excellent performances from our athletes across the board, RPAC finished in a very creditable fourth place on the night.

Rafi Varah finished seventh overall on the night. Two of our younger athletes, Vivvy Loynes and Morgan Du Preez, were our first and third highest female scorers respectively. Vishaal Senthilkumar threw the howler a massive 41 metres. The highlight of the night was undoubtedly the relay, where we won by almost 20 metres, allowing Rafi to showboat through the final metres of the race.

There will be no Wednesday sessions until further notice - please keep checking in with the newsletter for any further communication.

New Strength and Conditioning class on Wednesday

We all know that strength and conditioning is a big part of improving running performance, it's just a matter of finding time to do it. So how about Wednesdays? Alex Crump, former Royal Marine Commando, of Rugged Fit Outdoors leads our new session at Mercers Country Park every Wednesday evening - we hear it's tough, in a good way. Each 45 minute session is £7 Pay As you Go and there is a QR code on site you can securely pay on arrival. If you decide you enjoy these sessions, there is the option to pay on subscription at £25 monthly. Please join the WhatsApp group listed in the email version of this newsletter if you are interested in coming along; for anyone interested, a health questionnaire will be sent to you for completion.

Elmore 7 this Saturday

The Elmore 7 - a Surrey Road League race as well as one of our Grand Prix fixtures - takes place on Saturday, 13th July, starting and finishing at the lovely Chipstead Flower Show. This is a challenging but pleasant race that takes in some undulating hills and country lanes; plus, last year, we made it back in time for the falconry exhibition.

Jimmy James Handicap postponed

The Jimmy James Handicap race will be postponed from this Thursday, 11th July, to next Thursday, 18th July, owing to the Pub in the Park event taking place in Priory Park this weekend. The cut off for registrations is now 23:59 on Tuesday, 16th July. You must register if you want to take part even if you ran in the last race so that I can work out your handicap and start time. Please email if you'd like to run and if you haven't before, please include your recent 5K or 10K times so that we can work out your handicap. Handicaps and start times will be sent out on Wednesday, 17th July.
