A small team of RPAC members competed at the Southern Athletics League match in Lewes yesterday (Saturday 15th June), in a joint team with Dorking & Mole Valley and Holland Sports.

In the field events, RPAC were represented by Anousha Wardly and Dan Statham. Anousha won the pole vault despite only taking off from a short run  to protect a sore foot that prevented her from competing in all her planned events. Dan Statham also won the high jump and smashed his PB in the process. He jumped 1.76m which is a new U17 boys RPAC club record!

On the track, times were not helped by a big headwind in the home straight but there were a number of wins. Great scoring runs from James Naylor (100-B 13.0s) and Drew Burridge (400-A 53.3s & 200-B 24.2s), both winning their races against Seniors. Ginevra Stoneley won the 3K in 10:59.2 and was third in the 1500m in 5:13.1.

Ashley Burridge and Ivan Barrett were officiating all day for RPAC. From his position on the finish line as timekeeper Ashley started the day at noon putting on factor 25 and ended at 5:00pm in full wet weather gear! Ivan was also there all day and was officiating at the high jump to see Dan win.

Next SAL fixture is Saturday 13th July at Worthing, an excellent opportunity for the U17 and U20s to join with Seniors & Veterans in the only league which crosses the divide between Juniors & Seniors.

Summer Evening 10k (from Chris Veale and Usha Stevens)

The call for volunteers to assist with the Summer Evening 10k on the 3rd of July went out this week and we've been delighted to receive over 30 members (and their friends) offering a helping hand.  Thank you all very much.

To make the event a success we will need about 70 people to generously give the club a couple of hours of their time.  We're a decent amount of the way there but still need a few more friendly faces to get involved.

If you've not replied to the email sent out on Wednesday 5th June please drop Usha and Chris an email at  so that we will add you to the list of merry men, women and juniors who will make our event a success!

Also, please direct anyone you meet to www.summer10k.com and encourage them to sign up!

Junior news

Crawley Open Meeting from Wednesday 5th June (from Dave Mills)

The third Crawley Open Meeting of the summer took place last Wednesday and a number of Juniors took the chance to run in graded races and attack their PB's.

In the 1500m's there was another outstanding performance by Oscar Curry who won his race in 4.38.65 adding to his impressive run of PB's this season.

Eva Marsh and Shakila Keable also ran PB's in their 1500's, both girls improving on the PB's they had achieved 4 days earlier at the Lily B match in Walton!

Eva Peters and Lucy Dénecé doubled up with good times in their respective track events whilst for Eva there was a good leap of 4m.01 in the long jump and a season's best 18m.45 in the javelin for Lucy.

Year seven athletes were otherwise engaged on Wednesday with a schools match held at Hartswood.  One highlight worthy of note was Samuel Stapley's win in the 800m.

Whilst the time is unofficial, Samuel beat the outstanding Surrey 800m runner from Oxted School in the week where that runner was featured in Athletics Weekly Magazine! Well done Samuel.

Surrey Schools Track and Field Championships from Saturday 8th June (from Dave Mills)

The Surrey Schools Track and Field Championships took place on Saturday in Kingston. Having qualified through the various District events held earlier in the summer, a number of RPAC Juniors took part.

There was more Javelin success with Katie Mackison and Lily Cain-Jones taking Gold and Silver respectively in the Inter-Girls competition. Katie threw a massive 40m60 and Lily had a PB with an impressive 37m65. Katie should find herself going forward to the English Schools Championships as part of the Surrey team having achieved the Entry Standard with her throw, and having achieved the even more stretching National Standard earlier this summer.

Dan Statham equaled his high jump PB with 1m.65 finishing 6th in the Inter-Boys competition.

Vicky Wilkes (I-G 200m), Drew Burridge (I-B 400m) and Oscar Curry (Junior Boys 800m) all made it through to the final of their event with Vicky and Drew taking 4th place and Oscar 5th. Good achievements by all, firstly to qualify for these Championships, then to all have competed in the final of their event.

Get your vests on, Juniors - You never know who you might end up competing against

Under 17 Drew Burridge entered the Blackheath & Bromley Open graded meeting last Monday evening to compete in the 400 metres. Lining up outside him was Team GB's 2012 World Indoor gold medalist Perri Shakes-Drayton!
Drew held her off throughout the race, beating her by 0.4s.

Very sad news posted on the SCAA website that Jack Rutherford, until recently the chairman of Walton AC,  has passed away.

He was a great supporter of athletics across the county, and was at the Priory Relays supporting his Walton runners every year.

Now that Paul Walters is publishing a weekly news article / e-mail (thank you Paul!), I am going to largely restrict my monthly update to matters relating to the running of the club, rather than repeating information in the weekly news.

Committee 2019/2020

Subsequent to the AGM, parent Sam Burnett put her name forward to stand for the remaining vacant position on the committee. In the absence of any other nominations, Sam is duly elected to the Committee.

The full list of roles on the committee are:

Chair: Malcolm Woodman
Treasurer: Anthony Collins
Secretary: Ginevra Stoneley
Membership Secretary: Jas Dhanda
Communication: Paul Walters
Competition: Andrew Bamford
Development: Ellis Cain-Jones
Juniors: Mike Gent
Social / Volunteering: Sam Burnett / Usha Stevens

I will also be taking on the coach liaison role on the committee.

See the e-mail version of this update for e-mail addresses if you want to contact any of us direct.

Summer Evening 10k

It is our Summer Evening 10k on Wednesday 3rd July. Our new Race Director, Chris Veale, has been busy over the last few months putting everything in place, with an emphasis on making the race eco-friendly. With just over 3 weeks to go, we already have 270 entries, so we are well on the way towards our goal of 500 runners.

The first call for volunteers went out last week, and over 30 members, parents and friends have already responded. However, we need approximately 70 people in total to stage the race, so if you are able to help and have not yet replied, please do so as soon as possible. I am sure there will be further communications on this topic over the next few weeks!

EA 360 review

Subsequent to the AGM, we have formally agreed with England Athletics that they will perform a 360 Review for us, to help us identify our strengths & weaknesses and to support the development of the club going forward. This review will be lead by Natalie Kavanagh Clarke, our Club Support Manager at EA.

The plan is for Natalie to meet with as many people as possible who are involved in the club, whether that is as athlete, parent, coach or committee member. There will be a number of informal sessions organised where Natalie will be able to get feedback. The current plan is:

  • Wednesday 12th June: Committee
  • Tuesday 25th June: Parents and juniors (at K2 session)
  • Friday 5th July: Junior & senior coaches
  • Tuesday 16th July: Senior athletes (at Battlebridge)

We also need to arrange a session with the Wednesday evening group of senior athletes, but the date for that has not yet been finalised.

There will also be an online survey, which will be open to anyone connected to the club. Details of this are being finalised at the moment.

Further details of all these meetings and the survey will be sent out as required.

MABAC Holmwood Common

Having said I am going to restrict these updates to club matters, I do want to break my new rule immediately, to highlight that we had 21 seniors running in the MABAC league race at Holmwood Common this morning. This is comfortably a record turnout, and there were a large number of new faces amongst the 21. Well done to everyone who ran, it will be interesting to see if we finish further up in the team competition with that many runners! The photo below is not quite the complete team.

Reigate Priory AC parkrun tourism 2019 / 2020

Parkrun explained

For those who don't know (will there be anyone?) parkrun is a fantastic organisation, providing free 5km running events all over the UK and beyond, generally at 9AM on a Saturday morning. There are plenty of parkrun events within reach from Reigate for us to have a full schedule with a different parkrun each month for at least 2 years. You register at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/ and once registered you can visit any parkrun with your printed bar code (provided on registration). Results are provided later in the day on the parkrun website.

Who can come with us?

We want to invite senior Reigate Priory AC members, parents of junior members and accompanied junior members along to the parkrun events, but as long as there is space non-members can tag along. Note that for club members, we want to encourage you to wear your Reigate Priory AC vest.

Our parkrun tourism schedule

We have planned some dates for parkrun tourism for this coming year.

Our provisional schedule (liable to change dates/venues) is as follows...

22nd June 2019 Worthing parkrun - with minibus travel
27th July 2019 Mole valley parkrun
24th August 2019 Tilgate parkrun
5th October 2019 Horsham parkrun
23rd November 2019 Hove parkrun - with minibus travel
28th December 2019 Reigate Priory parkrun
25th January 2020 Banstead Woods parkrun
29th February 2020 Nonsuch parkrun
28th March 2020 Tooting Common parkrun - with minibus travel

We wish to cover the majority of the park runs using car sharing, but for three of them we will take minibuses.

Our first visit - Worthing parkrun Saturday 22nd June 2019

Why Worthing parkrun?

Worthing is a large and attractive seaside town in West Sussex at the foot of the South Downs with a pier and a long sea front.

But, and this is the main point, Worthing parkrun is a flat and fast out-and-back. It is PB material. Indeed, my two fastest parkrun times are set here. If you want to see what is possible here, see the Worthing results from 25th May 2019.

Afterwards, the visit to the hotel with a slap-up breakfast will cap off a wonderful visit to Worthing.

What is the itinerary?

The schedule will be...

7:15 Arrive at Reigate College (Rushworth Road entrance). We have use of the car park.
7:20 (Latest) set off for Worthing.
8:30 Arrive at Worthing.
9:00 Worthing parkrun.
10:00 Breakfast in The Burlington hotel.
11:00 minibus departs Worthing.
12:30 Back in Reigate College car park.

You can see the article from our previous Worthing park run adventure here.

What does it cost?

The cost is £14.50, which includes a full breakfast from The Burlington hotel on Worthing seafront and a contribution towards the minibus. The cost for non-members is £17.50, which includes breakfast but reflects a full payment for the minibus hire, although non-members will need to wait until the 13th June for confirmation as seniors, parents and accompanied juniors have priority over the seats available.

You can see the provided breakfast here, and you will need to send us your main breakfast selection from this list, although they can do special requests and dietary requirements - just ask us.

How do I take part?

If you'd like to take part, please send me an email on the address below before Thursday 13th June, and include who would like to come with their breakfast selection from here...

... and I will reply back with confirmation and details of how to pay.

Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday June 22nd.
