Onwards and upwards for Dan!
The Reigate Priory athletes who attended the third Youth Develoment League match at sunny Erith on Sunday enjoyed great success. Most notably, Dan Statham improved on his high jump personal best with a leap of 1.78m. He was second in his u17 age group, narrowly missing victory on countback.
Under 17s Lily Cain-Jones and Drew Burridge both won their events in the Javelin and 400 metres, respectively. Drew was well in the lead in the 200 metres when one of the "laces" failed on his running spikes as he was coming off the bend, forcing him to pull up. A cautionary tale for those athletes with, or considering purchasing, the Puma evoSpeed Disc spikes.
Due to the poor turnout of athletes, we finished 7th from the eight clubs in this match. We were also penalised for not providing sufficient helpers with Ashley Burridge, timekeeping, our only licensed official. Please could all parents of upper age-group junior athletes re-double their encouragement to get a better attendance for our next match at Mile End on Sunday, 28th June - email to follow later this month. The Youth Development League is just that, an opportunity to develop in a competitive environment, rather than Championship-only competition.
Qualifying as an athletics official is a pleasurable and relatively simple process. As a small club we have some very experienced officials across all the disciplines (track, field, timekeeping, photofinish and starting) but just not enough weight of numbers.
