From Paul Walters

When I ran Worthing parkrun on New Year’s Day 2019 while trying to find a fast one (with a much-improved parkrun PB of 19:31) I was so impressed that I decided to return for my birthday with others.

On Saturday March 23rd 18 people (16 runners) descended on Worthing Parkrun in a minibus provided by Reigate College. This was my first V55 event having had my birthday on the previous day.

Conditions were good – overcast, fairly warm for this time of year with little wind. The course is along the sea front. It sets off in a westerly direction just before the pier, and eventually you turn around a cone to return back to the finish outside a leisure centre a little further east to the start.

You can see the results below, and I’ve added previous bests from just the last year for each runner– PBs are in red. (Note – for some there are much better times historically, so I hope no one minds this format!)

On the day there were of course some injuries and niggles within our group, and quite a few were racing in longer distance running events on the next day, which makes the results even more impressive.

It’s well worth a mention that this was Adrian Grant’s 200th ever parkrun.

Afterwards we went to the Burlington Hotel on Worthing sea front for a breakfast. The hotel did us proud and put us in our own room with a large square table arrangement.

For me, there was no disappointment in finishing one second off my parkrun PB. This was such a lovely event. We were back in Reigate just after mid-day.

We even got a mention in the Worthing parkrun news!

A big thank you to Ian and Janet Moore for coming to support us and taking photos, and also to Ian Edmonds, who stepped in to drive the minibus due to Sarah being unwell.

We want to do this again soon but opening the event up to the club, perhaps at Worthing with a visit back to the Burlington Hotel, or may be at a different location. Watch this space!
