Summer Evening 10k - Thank You!

Summer Evening 10k - Thank You!

The sun, a slight breeze and temperatures in the high teens were all delivered as planned for this year's Summer Evening 10k.  We were pleased to see plenty of happy faces around the finish funnel as athletes re-hydrated from their RPAC branded bamboo cups!

This was only possible with the help of around 70 selfless RPAC members, friends and families donating their time to the club.  It's humbling to look at the sheer volume of names on the list of volunteers.

Thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success.

Chris Veale, Race Director

I would like to add my own thanks to everyone who helped on Wednesday, but in particular to Chris himself. I think everybody will agree that he has done an excellent job in his first year as Race Director, continuing the high standards set and maintained by all his predecessors, whilst putting his own unique stamp on our race. Thank you Chris!

What is Kate Knight up to?

If you missed Kate's three marathons in April, she ran in Manchester 7:15:24, Brighton 7:10:23 and London 7:02:23. Notice the improvement through the month?

This last weekend Kate was taking part in the Cotswold Way Challenge 100km, which she completed in a time of 31.55.24,  a new PB for this course by just under 6 hours. Fantastic Kate!

The Peak District Challenge 100km on 13th and 14th of July is approaching on Kate's schedule.

By the way, Kate is fund raising for the Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust. You can see her fund raising page here.

YDL UAG, Erith - 30 June 2019

Onwards and upwards for Dan!

dan statham erith 20190630

The Reigate Priory athletes who attended the third Youth Develoment League match at sunny Erith on Sunday enjoyed great success. Most notably, Dan Statham improved on his high jump personal best with a leap of 1.78m. He was second in his u17 age group, narrowly missing victory on countback.

failed puma evospeed discUnder 17s Lily Cain-Jones and Drew Burridge both won their events in the Javelin and 400 metres, respectively. Drew was well in the lead in the 200 metres when one of the "laces" failed on his running spikes as he was coming off the bend, forcing him to pull up. A cautionary tale for those athletes with, or considering purchasing, the Puma evoSpeed Disc spikes.

Due to the poor turnout of athletes, we finished 7th from the eight clubs in this match. We were also penalised for not providing sufficient helpers with Ashley Burridge, timekeeping, our only licensed official. Please could all parents of upper age-group junior athletes re-double their encouragement to get a better attendance for our next match at Mile End on Sunday, 28th June - email to follow later this month. The Youth Development League is just that, an opportunity to develop in a competitive environment, rather than Championship-only competition.

Qualifying as an athletics official is a pleasurable and relatively simple process. As a small club we have some very experienced officials across all the disciplines (track, field, timekeeping, photofinish and starting) but just not enough weight of numbers. YDL Battersea 22 June 2019 - A Day of PB's!

YDL Battersea 22 June 2019 - A Day of PB's!

It was a great team effort at the latest YDL match held in Battersea on Saturday.  So many RPAC athletes with personal best performances!

In the U13 girls there were 1st place finishes  - ALL of which were with a PB!  - for Charlotte Pelekani A race 70mH, Phoebe Bakker B race 70mH, Lilah Unwin A race 800m,  Shakila Keable A race 1200m and Alessia Turner B race 1200m. For Shakila, posting a sub 4 min 1200m lifted her into illustrious company as only the third RPAC girl to achieve this. For Alessia there was also a big PB in taking 2nd place in the long jump where she jumped 4.06m. Lily Woodhams and Imogen Wheeler both PB'd in their 150m races. Several competed in two or three different events helping boost the team score.  At the end of a long hot day of athletics, Alessia Turner, Sophia Bryant, Tiggy Boyce and Imogen Wheeler ran a fast 4 x 100m U13G's relay securing a 2nd place finish. For some, this was their fourth event.

The U13 boys were also clocking up personal best performances.  Justin Collins had 3  -  100m, 200m and in the  high jump with an excellent 1m. 30 clearance. Harry Peters picked up PB's in the 75mH and 200m, Sunny Boyce in the Shot and the Javelin.  Max Orchard in his first YDL appearance had a long jump PB and ran a good first ever 800m to take 3rd place in the A race. In the 1500m there was a big PB in taking 2nd place in the A race for Sammy Rolaston.

More happy faces amongst the U15 girls where they all achieved best ever performances! Caitlin Holloway had three, 300m, Shot and Discus. Eva Marsh has had a great season and improved both her 1500m and long jump bests while others to double up were Iris McAuliffe with PB'S in her 100m race and in the Shot, Francesca Manrow who PB'D in the 200 and the 300m races, and Zara Watkinson in the 800m and Javelin! In the U15G'S 800m Imogen Gregory took a full 18 seconds off her PB!

Another who has been improving his times all summer is U15B Oscar Curry.  Oscar won the A race 800m with yet another PB finishing in a speedy 2.12.80.

The fourth and final Lower Age group YDL match is scheduled  for Saturday 20th July. This was to be held at the Wimbledon Park Stadium but now seems likely to be switched to the home track of Herne Hill Harriers in Tooting. Confirmation in due course.

South East Schools Inter-Counties Championships @  Erith Saturday 15th June by Dave Mills

Our two outstanding U17 Javelin throwers, Katie Mackison and Lily Cain-Jones were in action for Surrey at the South East Schools Inter-counties Track and Field Championships held recently in Erith.

Having been selected on the strength of their Gold and Silver medal performances at the recent Surrey Schools Championships, they yet again produced a master class in throwing to finish 1st and 2nd against the best from Middlesex, Kent, Hampshire and Sussex. Katie threw a huge 43.35 metres and Lily an impressive 34.92 metres. Both girls are highly placed in the UK rankings for the javelin with Katie 6th and Lily 23rd.

Surrey Quad Kids 2nd semi-final @ Guildford Wednesday 19th June by Mike Gent

Two RPAC teams, twenty athletes, competed in the Surrey Quad Kids second semi final at Guildford on Wednesday. There were some great performances on the night and the A team qualified for the final on 3 July, finishing second of all the teams across the two semi- finals. Special mention to Max Orchard who was the leading boy on the night with a very impressive score of 280 points.

Youth Development League @ Battersea Park Saturday 22nd June by Dave Mills

There was a good turn out from the U13/U15 boys and girls for the latest Lower Age Group Youth Development League match held in hot, sunny conditions at Battersea Park on Saturday.

Official results not yet posted to Power of 10 but we already know there were many RPAC Personal Bests achieved!

Ashley Burridge and Ivan Barratt were on Officials duty all day so special thanks to them and to David Manrow for managing the team.

A full report plus some pics will be posted on the web site once the results are published.

Mercedes Benz 5k @ Mercedes Benz World Sunday 26th May

He enjoyed the event so much that he is going to run it again in September.

Informal 10K (a.k.a. Near-as-Dammit 10K) @ Coulsdon Thursday 27th June 7:30PM

You are encouraged to participate in the Informal 10K this coming Thursday 27th June. The session in Priory Park on Thursday is cancelled for this week.

It's probably the least expensive 10K race you'll be able to take part in locally, the price for entry being just £4.

These events are hosted by South London Harriers, a series of three informal 10K races each year run over Coulsdon Downs and Happy Valley along tracks and paths. The entry form is here. I suspect that there will be a number of people entering this event from the club - Mike Pocock and Gavin Lawrence being two. If you want more details about this or wish to car share, it would be worth making this known at the track on Tuesday.

Also note that the last Informal 10K event of this year is on Thursday 25th July.

Harriers' Fast 5 Miler trail course @ Nonsuch Park on Sunday 30th June

Epsom & Ewell Harriers are hosting this new event next Sunday, including 1 mile and 5 mile races. You can enter the event via the Run Britain website here.

What is Kate Knight up to?

On the back of the Cheddar Gorge Challenge half marathon on Sunday 16th June (finish time 5:08:07), Kate followed up by running her fastest parkrun for a long time on Saturday 22nd June at Banstead Woods in a time of 43:12, and on Sunday 23rd of June she took part in the Midsummer Munro - a 'gratuitously difficult' half marathon with height gain/loss of 3000 feet - equivalent to a Scottish Munro - an 'ultra-half'. Kate finished the event in a time of 5:30:00.

Blimey! Congratulations Kate!

For those that remember former member Kevin Archer, he recently sent Nat the following update on his athletics:

Hello Natalie,

One of the reasons you’re so hard to forget is that last December time you were appearing regularly in the Athletics Weekly results, ‘stalking’ and even beating some of my former rivals, good athletes as well. I didn’t write to say well done then, because I was a bit injured, and didn’t want to make you big-headed. Now, I see your ladies team got the bronze at the Surrey Road Relays, so well done for that too. Of course, my Indoor and Outdoor track seasons did pick up, so I thought I’d do a bit of bragging too! I’ve probably missed loads of other good performances you’ve done, so hit me with them to get your own back, if you want.

I’ve had a stellar year.

Indoors - South of England 800m title (just did the one race); Inter Area 800m/1500m titles; silver in the British Champs (feeling rough, and defeat since avenged).

Outdoors – I won the Westminster Road Mile for the second year in succession, at the end of my age-group, beating Lord Sebastian Coe again (he's 3 years younger, but perhaps he wasn’t trying quite as hard as me?!

On the track, I did the South West and South of England 800m/1500m doubles; Inter Area 800m (just the one race); British Champs double. British lead 800m time by 8.74 secs, with 2:21.66, which is 2nd fastest all-time; 1500m by 8.9 secs, with 4:50.98 which is 3rd fastest all-time British run. British track Mile record 5:241 (still a soft record). World Champs 800m 4th, and 1500m, silver recently in Malaga. Now I’m full of the ‘flu and possibly a urinary infection, or heaven forbid something worse!! The ups and downs of stardom, eh! One of my long-time German rivals took a picture of us and sent it to the German press, so I am internationally famous now.

From June, my rise to fame was mainly because I moved into a new age-group (so I thought, you’re running against old men here, make it count!) Did you move up age-group?

Do you have a club house there? If so, be a sport and organise a plaque in my honour would you?!!! Well, perhaps not, but say hello to anyone who remembers me. I remember you once said, leaning over the balcony, just like Juliet, that you would be looking after me in a few years. Where are you now, when I’m just recovering from death’s door?!

I will still have to come and do the parkrun one day.

Best Wishes and happy running,

Kevin.

Photo shows me finishing 2nd in the World 1500m final, 7 secs clear of bronze.
