Reigate Priory Athletic Club is committed to a policy of athlete development in accordance with the coaching requirements of UK Athletics. One of the core principles of the programme is to give young athletes a broad introduction to the sport and guard against the risks of training too hard, too early, and overspecialising too soon.
The Junior section caters for Athletes from age 12-18. Prior to this we operate a Junior Academy section which meets once a week on Saturday mornings at 9:00am in Reigate Priory park. Here we take Athletes from when they enter school year 4.We are currently oversubscribed in both the Junior and Junior Academy sections and are having to operate a waiting list. If you would like your child to join the Club please contact the Junior Co-ordinator, Mike Gent.
There are currently over 150 young athletes attending our training sessions. With this in mind the club would like to take the opportunity to point out to athletes and parents the coaching principles we are working towards. If you have any questions please ask any of the coaches involved.
- For improvement there has to be regular training. It is for this reason we offer training both on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Training at the club once a fortnight or less is not conducive to progression. Movement into the training groups is by invitation only as spaces are limited. Spaces will be prioritised to athletes who have shown a willingness to represent the Club in competitions.
- At a young age training should be general. In other words concentrating on one event at a young age has proven to be counter productive. What is required is general training concentrating on specific aspects at certain ages. At RPAC we are looking for long term development rather than short term gain.
- Competition is an important part of the athlete's development. The winning of competitions is not so important,as in the younger age groups this is often down to size and not long term athletic ability. What is important is that children are given the opportunity to compete, so they can experience improvement over a series of events. You are asked to do what you can to allow your children to take part in competitive opportunities.
- During the winter months we participate in the Surrey Cross Country Leagues and support various local cross country races. In the summer months we participate in various athletics leagues including the Lily B league for girls (U11-U17), the Ebbisham League for boys (U13-U15) and the National Youth Development League (U13 - U15.)
- RPAC is a very friendly and welcoming club and we want you to enjoy being part of it but at the end of the day - we are an athletic club, not a social club.
- Some of our coaches will now be coaching event specific ‘development’ squads only and athletes will only be accepted when a place is available and if certain criteria and athletic standards have been met.
- Spaces are tight and will be prioritised to athletes who are prepared to compete for the Club. We reserve the right not to offer renewal to athletes who have not competed for the Club.
