The 2017/18 Jimmy James winner is Anthony Collins. With just 2 points covering the top 3, the competition was incredibly tight this year, commiserations to Bethany who was just pipped at the post, after she was unable to run the last 2 races.
The Jimmy James Handicap is a series of six races for RPAC seniors (17 or over) between October to March each season. As of the 2016/17 season, the races is held in conjunction with Dorking & Mole Valley AC over a course starting at Denbies. Each race is on a Thursday evening over a course of approximately 3.8 miles with a scratch time of 45 minutes. You can see the current handicaps here. Points are scored at each race as shown on the right.
Please note there is a small modification to the route as of the 1st December 2016 race, see the full course description and updated instructions here.
The championship will be decided on the total of the best 4 scores for each runner; the winner will be the person with the highest total score. In the event of a tie the trophy will be shared.
Full handicapping rules are suspended whilst we gain familiarity with the times over the new course. Instead, the handicappers will use their discretion to set appropriate handicaps. Handicaps will be based on the fastest time from each runner's 2 or 3 most recent runs over the handicap course, rounded to the nearest 15 seconds. The 3 runs can be from previous 2 years or 2 runs fom previous 1 year. Any new member will have to have run in two races before they qualify for an official handicap, but will score a single point for each of their qualifying races in the current season. The handicapper has the right to adjust handicaps where deemed necessary. In addition to the handicapper there will be two other members who will act as referees and approve any adjustments to handicaps. Any runner who is slower than 45 minutes will be given a zero handicap.
We expect members to take each race seriously but appreciate that for various reasons on some occasions they will not wish to run hard and therefore expect honesty from each runner to tell the handicapper if they are not racing.
In the spirit of Jimmy James, in whose memory this championship is named, a bottle of wine will be awarded to the winner of each race.
